GRACES LOGO February 5, 2008

I think birds are the prettiest, most elegant creatures ever. Don’t you ever wonder how perfectly they must be structured to fly, much less glide through the air so smoothly? I thought along the line of birds, particularly with their cliche little wings and feathers. I came up with some: a peacock, a swan, a bird of paradise and hummingbirds (rejected! too small) The idea is of the ugly duckling story, the transformations of these birds from fugly hatchlings to fully poised birds. I also thought about the butterfly, the gross caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

Then I started making a few sketchings, and realised that honestly, swans ALWAYS LOOK THE SAME. they always look like a number “2″ in some horrific font face. And then I sketched on more… And fell in love with the peacock. If you chopped off the top half of a peacock, it’ll look like a colourful fat bird. But once you notice what’s behind it, it becomes… a colourful and flamboyantly bombastically beautiful thingy. So I went on with the peacock. The standing position, and the perched position.

Then I deviated a little into the actual things that come with Graces. The first mental imagery of graces is a gown, followed by makeup, heels (I always spell them as “hells”. I think it reflects them a bit more accurately anyway), some funky hair, air-con, good food, disco balls, little cacti-resembling animals, Weining in a gown. So I took the gown idea.

Combining the tail of the peacock into a gown came to me during CHINESE LESSONS! (I am so sorry) I liked the idea, so I went home and nerdishly incorporated both elements on photoshop. Looking a bit plain, so I added the swirls, like a little mixing pot of dunno-what-ness.

And then I have no fonts so I anyhow choose.

    hey miao, yiran here.
i love your graces design! the bird looks really elegant and the design looks simple enough to be a logo, but also has quite a lot of interesting details in the tail feathers of the bird! (:
